MANILA — Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco laid out the government’s 2026 plans to surpass the 6.48 million foreign and returning overseas Filipino tourists recorded in 2025 during a press conference in Manila on Wednesday, January 21.
Among the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) priorities are sustaining tourism livelihoods, improving tourism infrastructure, and strengthening international partnerships and events.
Frasco emphasized that tourism remains a major economic driver, noting that last year the DOT recorded 134 million domestic trips, supporting the livelihoods of around 16.4 million Filipinos employed in the tourism industry. She called on Filipinos to continue supporting local tourism.
“Nakakatulong po talaga ito sa ating mga kababayan, considering how many people are employed in tourism and how many small businesses depend on tourism’s success,” she said.
To improve infrastructure, Frasco cited ongoing upgrades to local and international airports, the construction of tourist rest areas, the establishment of the country’s first tourist assistance call center, and the launch of a medical tourist concierge.
Frasco also said that the Philippines currently ranks 69th out of 117 economies worldwide in terms of tourism infrastructure.
“We have a lot more to catch up on, but we need the funds to improve (such),” she said.
The DOT also highlighted its international initiatives aimed at boosting tourist arrivals. These include the ASEAN Tourism Forum scheduled from January 28 to 30 in Mactan, Cebu, as well as the country’s hosting of the World Tennis Association (WTA) event, its first-ever international tennis tournament, both expected to attract more foreign visitors.
With visa requirements for Chinese nationals also recently waived, Frasco further expressed optimism about in foreign arrivals, particularly from the Chinese market. She pointed to a similar trend in the Indian market, which recorded a 21 percent increase in arrivals following the implementation of a simplified entry process.
During the press conference, Frasco also addressed recent accusations of self-promotion. She clarified that she has no intention of seeking national office, explaining that her frequent appearance on the department’s official social media pages reflects her nonstop work schedule.
“Nagtrabaho lang po ako nang nagtrabaho, nonstop, every day… maybe that’s why my face appears so often,” she said.
