MANILA – Health officials are pushing for year-round reforms in cancer care with the launching of the “National Cancer Grid,” a system designed to integrate cancer care services nationwide and make treatment more accessible and coordinated for patients.

During the Philippine National Cancer Summit (PCS) 2026, health officials and stakeholders pushed for a new framework that improves patient access to services.

With the theme “Scaling Up What Matters Most: Person-Centered and Integrated Cancer Care for Every Filipino,” the initiative focuses on strengthening early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa said the government aims to increase cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment by 50% by 2028.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the Philippines, with over 300 deaths recorded daily.

Lung cancer remains among top killers in PH

Organizers said the National Cancer Grid will link healthcare providers and institutions to streamline services and ensure patients receive continuous care.

"Fragmentation is our biggest challenge," said Dr. Catherine SC Teh, Chair of the PCS Cancer Commission.

"We have skilled clinicians, but the burden of integrating care is currently placed on the sick patient rather than the system. Every year, 1.5 million families are pushed into poverty by health expenses. This must change,” Teh added.

They also called for stronger coordination among government, private sector, and healthcare providers to improve cancer care delivery nationwide.
