LTFRB inspects jeepneys for roadworthiness in Manila

MANILA — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) conducted Thursday a roadworthiness inspection of jeepneys at a Motor Vehicle Inspection Center in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

According to LTFRB chairman Vigor Mendoza, the inspection covered a comprehensive and automated process, including visual inspection, side slip test, suspension test, brake test, emission test, sound test, and headlight assessment.

Both under-chassis and above-chassis components were examined, with a total of 57 inspection items evaluated per vehicle.

"Pinapakita natin sa ating mga stakeholders para kung ano pa ang dapat ayusin, baguhin, before we do full implementation nationwide... Ang atin naman, bibigyan natin sila ng pagkakataon kung bumagsak man para ayusin yung dapat ayusin," Mendoza said.

He added that the goal of the program is to improve public transport services.

"Wala namang tatanggalin sa daan, walang phaseout, walang ganung mangyayari. Ang gusto lang natin ang serbisyo sa tao mapahusay, maayos, malinis at safe," he said.

Manibela President Mar Valbuena supported the initiative and said that around 95 percent of their jeepneys are in good and roadworthy condition.

"Kapag hindi na roadworthy ang ating mga sasakyan, kahit anong uri pa yan ng panlupang transportasyon, dapat naman talaga itigil na yung pagbiyahe at pagbigay ng prangkisa," Valbuena said.

The LTFRB also said they're planning to do bus inspections next week.
