PH coordinates with Cambodia to locate Atong Ang

MANILA — A Philippine liaison officer has been coordinating with Cambodian authorities to try to locate fugitive businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, who may be hiding there.  

Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the Philippines has an extradition treaty with Cambodia, and Ang could be sent home if found there.

He also noted that with the Philippines’ chairmanship of the ASEAN Summit this year, coordination could be much easier.

“Ang problema na naman, napakadaming salapi niyan, ‘di ba? Pero hindi imposible lahat ‘yan. Si Teves naparaming salapi pero nakuha pa rin natin sa Timor Leste,” Remulla told reporters at Camp Crame.

(The problem again is that he has a lot of money, right? But none of this is impossible. Teves also had a lot of money, yet we were still able to get him from Timor-Leste.)

Whistleblower says Atong Ang possibly in Cambodia or Thailand—DILG

Timor-Leste extradited expelled congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. to the Philippines last May to face murder cases for the 2023 killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Noel Degamo and several others.

Remulla earlier said Ang is believed to be either in Cambodia or Thailand, based on the statement of whistleblower Julie Patidongan, although there has been no physical sighting of him yet.

Remulla said at least 18 sites in the country have been raided by police in the search for Ang over the past 20 days.

“His world is getting smaller; paliit nang paliit ‘yan,” Remulla said.

(His world is getting smaller; it will keep shrinking.)

Ang is the subject of arrest warrants issued by two courts over his alleged involvement in the disappearance of sabungeros linked to his cockfighting operations.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government has offered a P10-million reward for anyone who can provide information on Ang’s location.
