DFA: Iran to allow safe passage of PH-flagged ships, seafarers through Strait of Hormuz

MANILA (UPDATED) — Iran will allow the “safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage through the Strait of Hormuz” of Philippines-flagged vessels, energy sources and Filipino seafarers, following talks between Philippine and Iranian officials, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Thursday.. 

In a statement, the DFA said Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi the assurance following a phone conversation with Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro.

Lazaro also noted that the new development is vital for the country, as it will not only “ensure the safety of Filipino seafarers operating in the area but will also help ensure energy security for the country.”

The DFA, in a separate statement Thursday, said there are no "toll fees" for Philippines-bound vessels that will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, amid reports Iran may impose a “toll booth” system.

“On question regarding the reported toll fee, there is no toll fee,” the DFA said.

The call between the two foreign ministers also concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to maintain excellent relations between Iran and the Philippines.

Developments in the Middle East, which is also called West Asia, have prompted President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to declare a state of energy emergency last week to ease restrictions on the procurement of petroleum products from other markets.

While the government maintains that the Philippines has about two months worth of oil stockpile, ordinary Filipinos have been forced to tighten budgets as the price of diesel, gasoline and kerosene hover around $100 per barrel.
